Please make sure to send your student with appropriate clothing for the weather. As we all know the Michigan weather is changeable! Make sure kids have warm coats. They should be wearing pants or skirts (with tights or leggings, please!). Please do not send in shorts unless at least 60 degrees.
Make sure to read for 20 minutes daily, do RAZkids and Xtramath weekly for homework-we DO receive reports from the websites to get information on how much time the child is working on site and what levels/skills they are passing or need help with.
On gym days, please send your child to school wearing their gym shoes.
Please continue to practice number bonds at home.
What's Going On In First Grade???
Reading We are working on developing strategies for reading tricky words in both whole and small groups. We are also practicing a number of different comprehension strategies. Additionally, students have been working on the phonics dance and should be applying this knowledge to decoding words when reading. This will help them recognize, read, and write common spelling patterns. To learn more about the phonics dance, view the video at the end of this newsletter.
Social Studies
We are learning about holidays in the fall and seasons.
Math 1st graders are working on fluency for addition facts with number bonds, finding the missing part and the part added in to a story problem, and determining if they are looking for a whole or part in their journal work. They have also been completing math journals to practice these skills.
Science 1st graders are working on science fair experiments using the scientific method.
